Your visit to our hygiene team is THE key to lasting oral health…
Many people visit the dentist but choose not to see their hygienist, which means they are only getting half of the support they need!
What is a dental hygienist and what do they do?
Our hygiene team are specially trained professionals who work alongside Zoe and Kirsty to provide specialist care to maintain your oral health and prevent decay. They will work with you and help give you the skills, tools and techniques to remove plaque from every surface of every tooth every day, as well as providing a thorough professional clean for you whilst in surgery.
Prevention is better than cure
What other things can my hygienist help me with?
There are many factors which affect your oral health and they will give you advice on diet and lifestyle factors which will affect the health and stability of your gums and underlying bone support. They will show you how to clean in between your teeth. Regular visits and advice will build your confidence and drastically reduce the chances of you suffering from decay and other dental problems in the future (potentially saving you money too!)
Why should I take care of my gums, surely my teeth are more important?
Your gums and underlying bone support are vitally important. If plaque is left on your teeth it becomes hard and impossible to remove using a toothbrush, the bacteria it produces will eventually start to destroy the bone support which holds teeth firmly in place, this will lead to wobbly, often painful teeth and ultimately tooth loss. Your gum condition also has a direct link to other medical conditions such as heart disease.
My gums bleed sometimes when I brush, am I brushing too hard?
It is unlikely that brushing your teeth too hard, gums tend to bleed because of inflammation caused by the bacteria found in plaque. This is an indicator that you have gum disease and it shouldn’t be ignored. Take extra care in the areas which are bleeding and ensure you brush and clean in between your teeth daily and the bleeding should stop, if it does not or you are concerned you should always seek advice from a dental professional.
