We get asked all the time about how to wean Children off a dummy. Whilst we agree they are a godsend at times helping to settle off an unsettled baby as you know they can have a detrimental effect on babies teeth development. So if you have decided it’s time to ditch the Dodo these tips may help…
If your child is particularly taken with a certain type of animal you could always ask if they wanted to donate their dummy to a local dog home or zoo for the baby animals to have? Or if your child loves a certain TV programme character maybe the dummy could get sent to them to ‘look after’.
If you are close to Christmas or Easter maybe leaving their dummy in exchange for presents and/or chocolate might work. Or maybe Santa needs it for the baby reindeers??
The dummy fairy is one which can be used all year round! Putting the dummy under a tree in the garden or pillow for the dummy fairy to collect can be really useful!
I once read online that one Mum took her child to Build a Bear and they stitched the dummy inside the new bear for her!
Or finally…. Some good old fashioned bribery!! Not that we in any way condone this on occasion its ok!
If you aren’t ready to go cold full cold turkey …. Why not try piercing a couple of pin holes into the dummy so that the suction is reduced, if the effect of the dummy is less your child might give it up on their own.
We hope that you might find these helpful! We would love to hear any success stories!
