Well that’s it for 2020 (thank goodness)! If you are embarking on dry January in 2021 firstly-well done you!
Are you aware of the health and social benefits of cutting out the booze for a while? Even after one week you may notice a change in your concentration levels and have more energy (which is definitely needed especially in January) You may also notice that you are able to drift off to sleep just that little bit quicker and the quality of your sleep may be better even after such a short space of time.
After 2 weeks a lot of people notice a clearer head and a reduction in acid reflux/ heartburn. Your body will also be much better hydrated and if you go to the gym or do any form of exercise or sport you may notice your ‘gains’ a little quicker!
You may notice that you start to lose a few pounds too- when we diet we tend to look at calorie intake for food but many alcoholic drinks are high in calories (and sugar!) The average pint or glass of wine is 200+ calories (and those are pub measures not our home bar measures!?) You might also notice your memory getting better.
At the end of January you risk of developing cancers is diminishing as is your risk of heart disease and stroke. You should also notice a change in your skin condition – alcohol makes your skin lose water and sodium more quickly, so your skin should look more plump and soft. If you suffer from high blood pressure this should start to come down as does your risk of type 2 diabetes! And giving your liver a rest has multiple benefits too! 64% of people who do dry January find that they drink less in the months that follow too.
So there you have it, the main health benefits of cutting out drink for a month. It doesn’t have to be January though any month can do! And even if you are just drink a relatively small amount of alcohol the benefits will still be there!
Good luck!
