Carrying on our current hot topic of our new health checks in this blog we will be looking at the links between your Oral Hygiene and Respiratory disease.
If your oral health is poor, bacteria from your mouth can easily find its way to your lungs and exasporate any issues which are there- this can lead to pneumonia and an increased risk of emphysema too.
There are over 700 different types of bacteria in your mouth- some of these you need, others are harmful and are a direct link to poor oral hygiene. This will also cause gum disease and tooth decay if left untreated.
Bacteria travels to the body from the mouth two ways- when you breathe it in and in your bloodstream. This bacteria can cause widespread inflammation. Our bodies are programmed to fight this but only to a certain extent- if you have poor oral hygiene this is already something extra for your body to fight off leaving it vulnerable to other conditions and issues.
Keeping your teeth clean and gums healthy and visiting your dentist and hygienist regularly are key aspects to keeping your oral hygiene in good condition and therefore your whole body too. Our new health checks are also available so that you can get to know your numbers and alert you to any potential issues to get checked out.
