Research has highlighted that people are still unaware of the risks posed by the deadly duo of smoking and drinking alcohol to excess.
Almost 89% of people spoken to didn’t know that tobacco and alcohol combined increases the risk of cancer of the mouth by up to 30 times. Most thought that doing both in excess simply doubles the risk, but this misunderstanding places a significant amount of people at risk from a disease which kills one person every 4 hours in the UK.
More people die from oral cancer than from cervical and testicular cancer combined and, more worryingly, the disease is one of a few which is set to increase in the next ten years.
This is why it’s so important to get your mouth checked regularly by a dentist. If you are a patient at Diana Dental this is done at every oral health review.
Even if you don’t have your own teeth and wear dentures, it’s still vitally important to visit us at least annually for a check-up.
Naturally, if you have any concerns about your mouth, such as an ulcer which is present for longer than usual, then please come along to see us as soon as possible. We’ll be able to put your mind at rest so you can focus on something more pleasant, like enjoying yourself!
