Here at Diana Dental we have been troubled with the recent influx on our social media feeds offering mail order aligners and DIY ultrasonic scalers promising to save you £100s on ‘unnecessary’ dental fees…..
Whilst these cheap and quick offers look so tempting there are lots of things to consider when ‘opting out’ of dental treatment to do it yourself. We completely understand that now more than ever we are all looking into ways to save money but we feel passionately that this is an area which should be left well alone!
When you choose a dental practice for any sort of treatment we encourage anyone enquiring at our practice to look at our credentials- all the photos on our website; social media and in practice of before and after treatments are patients we have treated- not stock photographs- and our testimonials both written and recorded are of patients who have undertaken treatment of some sort at our practice.
The idea to us that you can straighten your teeth at home after taking an impression yourself is a little worrying… moving teeth is an extremely complex procedure which should be done under the direct supervision of a dental surgeon- at a dental practice – so that we can monitor closely the movements of your teeth. Unfortunately, if teeth are moved incorrectly or too quickly it can cause serious issues for you in the long term. In addition, if the initial impression taken is incorrect (its harder than you might think!) then this could also have a detrimental effect on your end result as the initial recording of your teeth will be incorrect.
We have chosen to provide Invisalign aligners for a reason-they are a quality, trusted brand with highly trained dental professionals treatment planning our patients along with Zoe, Andy or Sharon (so you essentially get 2 professionals looking after you). You also get to see your end result before you start treatment!
The ultrasonic scalers which encourage you to DIY your own dental cleaning are also becoming a worrying trend- our lovely hygiene team have spent 3 years at university plus regular continuing professional development to provide you with thorough cleaning and oral hygiene education so you can look after your teeth effectively at home too. A lot of the work done in surgery is removing the plaque which is so detrimental to your gum and tooth health- if this isn’t done effectively and regularly it can cause premature tooth loss. We will also give you the skills, tools and techniques to do this effectively at home. Whilst paying for one of these ultrasonic machines and cleaning your own teeth might come with a much smaller price tag, in the long run it could come with a lot more detriment to your overall gum and tooth health- is this a risk worth taking? We don’t think so!
If you are concerned about the cost of dental treatment please speak to one of our team- we have several membership options available starting at as little as £12 per month and we also offer several finance options for larger treatments too!
