Ok we admit it! An electric toothbrush is hardly the most exciting present to give or receive at Christmas….. but!!! The gift of good oral hygiene is priceless and can help to keep the one you love healthy.
At Diana Dental we don’t recommend a particular brand of toothbrush but we appreciate there is such a vast market and choosing the right one can be a little daunting. Prices can range from £20-£200 but you don’t always have to splash the cash to get a decent brush.
Here are some features to look out for….
Timer- recommended tooth brushing is 2 minutes twice a day. 2 minutes is longer than you think and with the average adult only brushing their teeth for 45 seconds this feature is a must!
Quad pacer- just as important as a timer! Have you ever drifted off whilst brushing your teeth thinking of the day ahead and realised you have only brushed one part of your mouth, then it’s a quick swish around the rest?? We all have! A quad pacer will pause the brush for a few seconds to tell you its time to move to a different area.
Oscillating head- we recommend this type of head as it rotates in one direction then the other to sweep away plaque.
Brush type- small round heads are the best as they can reach all areas of your mouth, with soft bristles too.
Pressure sensors- We have all given our teeth a ‘good scrub’ at times but this is really damaging to your teeth and gums and can cause issues such as sensitivity. Some electric toothbrushes will stop if you press on too hard to prevent this from happening.
Other things to consider- shop around and get a good price but also look at how much replacement heads are- quite often the brush itself can have a great offer but the heads work out really pricey and can put people off replacing them.
We hope this helps! We actively encourage our patients to bring their brushes along to their hygiene appointments to get expert guidance from one of our lovely hygienists on how to get the best from their brush!! This goes for you manual brush users too.
