What we are finding more and more is that people are coming to see us for these treatments having already had braces when they were in there teens and have now seen a relapse in their treatment which is mainly due to the lack of retention after the treatment has finished.
We always stress to our patients that the retention stage of your orthodontic treatment is one of the most important. Retainers are used to hold the teeth into the position that they are in after the orthodontic treatment has been completed or in other words the position you want your teeth to be in!
The importance of retention is something which has been realised more and more over the years, and if you have a teenager in the house who is undergoing orthodontic treatment then you might need to get nagging at them (add another thing to the list!) to make sure they are wearing their retainers (if they have the removable kind) as they have been advised by the orthodontist.
